Welcome to the Apple community.
Using iCloud email, will in no way affect any other email accounts, they will continue to function as they always have.
Yes, I have. Switching to iCloud caused my gmail "fetch" function to stop. I can still get both .mac apple mail and gmail, but gmail no longer "fetches" my apple mail. It WAS convenient to have all accts concentrated on gmail, since icloud e-mail is terrible, but I can no longer accomplish this.
Looking for any suggestions.
The way you described your problem in your original post was incorrect. Gmail has nothing to do with iCloud nor does it 'sync' with gmail or vice versa.
All you had done was setup gmail to pull in email from iCloud via POP3. iCloud no longer supports the old POP3 protocol. You can setup iCloud to forward your mail to your gmail account instead.
If you don't like iCloud's webmail interface, why don't you use the dedicated Mail client on your Mac as intended to be used with iCloud?
