Q: how do i set up dual monitors for my imac

I have an intel imac and would like to set up a second monitor to allow for more simultaneous side-by-side space when I do programming/editing.  As I'm not interested in paying $1000+ for an apple monitor, I'd like to use a third party one.  Thus far, I think I need a VGA to MiniDVI adapter (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A), but then can I use ANY monitor that has a VGA port?  And then will it be as simple as plugging in the second monitor and detecting it?  Will the iMac screen remain unchanged?  Will the computer just "know" when I scroll across one screen to the other?  Thanks for advice/help!

Yes, if properly cabled, the monitor will be detected automatically.  Settings are in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab. (Only appears once monitor is detected).

Tried set up a Planar portrait monitor on 10.7.5. Could not get the option to rotate the display. Upgraded to 10.8.2 and was able to accomplish the task without any deletion of files as suggested to solve the problem on 10.7.5. Others with more experience should evaluate the process. It could be easier - in particular where the confirm popups open.
