Connecting my iPhone to the tv to watch netflix. Is this possible?

I bought a cable to connect my 3g iphone to my tv to watch nextflix, but when I did the only thing I could do was watch videos or see pictures I had downloaded onto my iphone. Is there a way to connect the two so I could watch netflix?
