Phone deleting text messages....

I am finding that on some text threads the earlier messages are unavailable... i can only scroll back so far in the conversation. This is particularly noticeable on some conversations held whilst i've been overseas and therefore not backing up to my macbook. How can i recover the earlier part of the conversations?
