have an 3g ATV (5.0 4099) wired via coax cable to actiontec MI 424-wr router. Router cannot see ATV. Is there a way to test ethernet connector on back of ATV? ATV does work when setup for wireless but its much too slow for actual use when configured that way.

I'm a little confused here. How does one connect to the AppleTV via Coax? The connection between your Router and the AppleTV should be an ethernet cable.

You should be able to log into your Router and see the AppleTV. Have you tried configuring the connection in the AppleTV Setup Screen? You should be able to see it's IP address there.

Yes, i can connect to the router and i can see the atv. ATV when booted just shows the date and time screen. tried port forwarding tcp port 123 for the time server and port 80 but ATV still cannot get time. router cannot ping atv
I assume that you have a computer also connected on the LAN. Can you ping the ATV from that machine? What IP address does the router give the ATV? It should be something like 192.168.1.5 (192.168.x.y).
In a terminal type
> ping 192.168.x.y
(CTRL-c will stop it)
You also need to configure the Router to supply DNS Server information for the AppleTV.
I cannot ping the ATV via the router but connected to my mac via cable i can ping successfully . the ip of the ATV is 192.168.1.2. router also sees the atv as same ip. i just tried to access a dhcp lease on the router for the atv but its been 30 minutes and still hasn't been able to access one.

I think the isssue is clearly that your router is not acting as a DNS Server. You will need to contact Verizon to see how to configure it so that it does supply the DNS addresses. If you can configure it in your Router try using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as the DNS Server addresses. These point it to Google's Public Domain DNS Servers. There are others (opendns.org). But for now these will hopefully get you up and running.

Its up and running. Seems it was a combination with DHCP and maybe the mask. Once verizon allowed the DHCP thru still could not get it connected. Rebooted ATV & router several times and noticed the mask did not match router. Not sure if that was the last piece to fix it but once i matched it the atv connected. thanks again for your help.
