stack issues

I just upgrade my iMAC to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from Tiger, but I can't seem to find the new feature "stacks" in the dock - does anybody know how I can activate stacks ? As fare as I understand it there should be 3 predifined stacks in the dock ???
