My iPhone no longer recognizes when I plug in headphones or any other external audio device. A software upgrade fixed this problem once, but the problem has come back and upgrades won't fix it. No matter what I plug into the headphone jack, audio continues to play out of the phone speakers. I'm outside of my warranty and not near an Apple store. Help?!

I am, but the case isn't in the way of the headphone jack. The plug fits in snug. And I did try removing the case just to be sure. I checked that support page and couldn't find an answer for my problem there.
Are you using a case for your phone? If you are try removing it and then plug in your headphones. if that doesn't apply then take a look at the link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Check if the jack port have any dust, wool or cotton that could came from your pocket
