As this thread is 5.5 years old then yes, you could say that it's out of date with how things now work.

I have searched everywhere for this and the only answer is that you MUST BUY DIRECT FROM APPLE. Apple have forced users to buy from their stores since they have hacked away at itunes to stop people putting their own books on it.

You haven't done much searching. You can still add books to a device by dragging-and-dropping from Window Explorer / Finder onto the device in iTunes e.g. With the new iTunes (12.7), how do I manage PDFs, ePUBs not purchased through Apple in Windows 10

Or use iTunes 12.6.3 as per that thread.

Where did you buy the ebook from, and has it got any form of digital rights management on it ? If it is DRM free then you should be able to add it to your computer's iTunes via File > Add To Library, and you can then sync it to the iBooks app on your iPad (if the app isn't on your iPad then you'll need to download it) - connect and select the iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes and then select the Books tab on the right-hand side.

If the epub book has DRM on it, then has the store that you got it from got their own app in the app store ? If they have then you'll need to install that app on your iPad and then copy the book to it - which may be by re-downloading it directly in the app or via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes
