Suddenly I have 9 shadows extending vertically from the dock on my 4 year old Macbook Pro. A problem

I love my Macbook Pro - 4 years old but suddenly I have 9 or maybe 10 "shadows" of finger like projections extending upwards form the dock abot 1/3 of the way to the top of the screen. Do I have a problem? It is very distracting.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Do they change if you hide the dock, move the dock, or change the size of the icons?

Are they there covering a window placed above the dock?

Are they there if you reboot?
