Q: Data use: Email attachments (Exchange)

Hello,

I am using my iPhone both privately as business wise. I'm often abroad and then the data usage becomes an important issue. I found out that a large part of the data use is due to email attachments. In fact; email attachments from my colleagues (via Exchange email). Only attachments from these emails are downloaded automatically, even in 3G/EDGE mode.

Is there anyone who has an idea how the settings can be changed, in order that all attachments are only downloaded when I really want them to. So always manually instead of automatic. BTW: I want to keep the emails themselves being 'pushed' to my device, only not the attachments.

Note: above is also applicable for my iPad when using the sim card instead of WiFi.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

    Hi,

I realise that this post is very, very old. I'm hoping you have email alerts on!

I just wondered if you ever manage to resolve this? Was it just fixed in the next iOS update or did you have to do something else?

We're using iOS9.1  and seeing the exact same thing.

Yep, I have the same problem.  I noticed my data usage was very high on iOS 9 so switched off WiFi assist but that didn't fix it.  I then noticed my Exchange data usage was massive and that all my email attachments are being automatically downloaded even when roaming.  There has to be a way to stop this as this is killing my data usage!  Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Yes it's quite a serious bug as its costing our company a fortune! We've tried to implement a ActiveSync profile on the Exchange server which limits the maximum attachment size, but that doesn't seem to be working.

I guess the only work around is to turn off mobile data for mail, which is a pain.

I've since spoken to Apple support, they've confirmed they know about the issue - still waiting for more information on when it's going to be fixed - hopefully 9.2!!

    Hi Captbrim,

Did you ever work around this issue? Months on and we're still no closer to a solution.

    Regards,

    Dave
