Problems with Skype group calling

Skype works quite well on my iMac for calls with single individuals, and for group calls where someone else initiates the call. But I am unable to launch a group call without Skype going sideways -- all audio suddenly gets so distorted it is unusable. Anyone else experienced this or know about a fix?
