Using Photos from Aperture in FCP X

I am brand new to FCP X, and am trying to use photos that I have in Aperture. When I bring the photos to the timeline, they are much smaller files that the files I have in Aperture. How can I get the full version into my project in FCP?

ffpdbt12,

How are you bringing the photos in?

If you are using the browser in FCPX it uses the priews from Aperture. The settings in Aperture's preferences for preview detrermines the resolution of the photos in used in FCPX. I set mine to 2560 x 2560. This allows for cropping and zooming in FCP. See below.

You don't get (or want ) the full image resolution brought in. Hope this helps.

I spent a couple of hours at my local Apple store yesterday, and it appears that this might be a flaw in the Final Cut program. We tried a number of things, and it looks as if I may have to do a workaround until Apple changes this in the program. I have one more expert that I will be talking to tomorrow evening, and maybe he will have an answer. Thank you Tom, Switchie2, and Michigan One Fly. I'll let you know if there is a solution, to my now clearer question.

Why see so many experts ? Why look for a workaround ?

You have two solutions that are both working fine :

(1). You can import the pictures using the browser inside FCPX. But in this case be aware that you import the pictures at the resolution that is set for the "previews" inside the preferences in Aperture (set them at a minimum of 1920 px and MORE if you intend to use the Ken Burns Effect. That's what both Michigan one Fly and I suggested.

(2). Or you can select the ones you need (inside Aperture) and EXPORT them from Aperture to your desktop (at the resolution you chose when you export them) and then import them into your FCPX EVENT as any other clip or jpg.

Both solutions are just 2 clics away ! You do not need an expert from Apple !

Start working. Don't worry. Both solutions are working fine.

But it DOES authorise the files at a "decent size" !

But you first have to set the size you want in Aperture (preferences -> previews).

Set it big (1920 or more) and they'll be imported big (1920 or more) in the photo browser.

You're the one who sets the size or the previews ! (but it'll be set for everything : FCPX, Keynote etc)

YOU chosee the "decent" size you want to work with :-)

I have set the preferences at 2560 X 2560, and even unlimeted. That did not make a difference in the photo browser, which are still small thumnails.

According the the Final Cut Pro X Professional Video Editing, by Diane Weyand, page 352 "Once you locate the thumbnail of the hotos you want in the Browser, it's an easy matter of dragging one or more to an Event or even directly to the Timeline". When I do this, it brings in the Thumbnail, not the actual file.

For example, EdenA is a 5.1 MB file in Arperture, and it shows up in the photo browser as 137.5 KB in the photo browser. When I eport it from Arperture to the desktop, and import it into FCPX, it retains its 5.1 MB size.

I have chosen to use your #2 that you sent previously. "Or you can select the ones you need (inside Aperture) and EXPORT them from Aperture to your desktop (at the resolution you chose when you export them) and then import them into your FCPX EVENT as any other clip or jpg." That seems to work just fine.

I use a lot of old photos that I scan in some of my videos, so I just needed to find a way that will work for me, and this seems to be the way I can do it. Thanks for your input.
