No no no. What is essential and not even described, is after you tap the art work and the pop up song screen comes up you must scroll down on the screen to see the shuffle and repeat buttons. There is where you choose.

Jets fan 1457,
We are talking about iPhones here, and the timeline you reference is not on my 6s. I pressed the space you indicated but the song that played next and in the 'up next' list are still shuffled.
The reply that you're referring to was from five years ago, and at that time those were the correct instructions.
Now it is a different process. While music is playing bring up the full screen artwork of what's playing. Now slide the artwork up and you'll see a big red Shuffle button -- tap that to turn Shuffle OFF.
Embarrassed to admit this but I had to revert to the User Guide - page 76-77. When a song is playing just tap the artwork and the song timeline and shuffle / repeat / genius icons appear - just tap to select which one you want. Finally, I can sleep again - hope this works for you. Cheers
Jets fan 1457,
Actually.. Not helpful. I accidentally pressed the helpful button. We are talking about iPhones here, and the timeline you reference is not on my 6s. I pressed the space you indicated but the song that played next and in the 'up next' list are still shuffled.
Truthfully. I've looked for a solution to this before, and came away with: it can't be done, fuhgettaboutit, which is frustrating when an album (like Hamilton) really begs to be played sequentially.
I do wish apple would fix this. In my opinion it is a serious flaw.

Nancy,
Are you referring to computer use?
On phones, the shuffle can not be turned off. The only choice is 'repeat.'

That's not correct, you can turn Shuffle off on iPhones -- please read the thread above for instructions.

just start playing music from your artists, songs, etc list without selecting Shuffle.. not hard.
If Shuffle was previously used, it will remain ON even if you don't select the "Shuffle" selection at the top of a playlist, album, or All Songs by an artist. You have to turn if OFF from the Now Playing screen anytime it was previously used.

Thank you!

Mucho thank you! 😊
When a song is playing, under the bar showing how much time has elapsed in the song, on the right side is a set of arrows that cross in the middle. Press that until it turns white. That should do it.
thank you, your directions finally helped me turn off shuffle on iPhone 6

Now if the developers could find a way to disappear the "shuffle" icon.
Why would you want the shuffle icon hidden (or removed)? It is a very useful feature, and simple to use once you get past the initial learning curve (which admittedly, shouldn't be required).
Being able to disable the shuffle icon would be very beneficial to me. I use an iMac to play split tracks for my church choir. Each song can have up to a dozen tracks and it is very embarassing when the tracks get shuffled and play in random order. On my iMac the shuffle icon is light blue. When shuffle is engaged there is a light grey box surrounding the blue icon. It is a very subtle difference and it can easily go unnoticed. I wish the shuffle feature could be completly disengaged. I like the feature on my personal computer and use it often. But, for my church computer I need it to go away.

Despite its title, this thread is actually about the Music app on the iPhone, not iTunes (the computer program).
But for PC or Mac, if there is no song playing you won't see the criss-cross arrows at the top of the screen, but you can always go to Controls/ Shuffle to see Shuffle's current setting, as well as change the shuffle mode (i.e. shuffle by song, album, or grouping). If a song is playing or paused, well then Shuffle is quite clearly indicated at the top of iTunes.
