Cracked my iPad screen. How much $ to replace?

First, don't get your hopes up: it won't be free. ;)

Second, be sure to back it up yourself, either by syncing via iTunes or using iCloud. Apple will simply replace the device then and there. They WILL NOT back it up for you.

Third, the cost should be about $249, according to others on this forum, but that doesn't appear to be an official price. In other words, they may change it at any time.

Fourth, the lack of a proper receipt may render all of this moot, since you bought it on the "gray market" from an unofficial reseller. Since you can't prove it's still under warranty -- because it's an iPad 2, not a 3rd generation model, there's no inherent proof it's under a year old -- they may just say you have to live with it or pay full retail.

Apple does not repair iPads, it replaces them. Accidental damage is not covered in the iPad's warranty, nor is it covered in basic Apple Care*. Apple will charge you basically half or more of the retail cost of your iPad model. Apple should transfer the remainder of your warranty to the replacement iPad. Based on how much warranty was left on your iPad, you may find it much cheaper to have a 3rd party repair shop replace the glass (or full display, as necessary) and kiss the last couple of months of warranty good bye.

*You can purchase Apple Care + for the new iPad (3rd generation) within the first 30 days after your purchase that does cover accidental damage with a US$49 deductible.

The answer to your cost question is easily answered. Go to: Support > iPad > Welcome > Service + Repair > Warranty & Service > Pricing.

As to buying online from a stranger: caveat emptor. As to worrying about whether your video gaming data is saved: you're worried about the wrong thing.

Apple's Limited Warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ for iPad excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.

Apple will provide a replacement iPad for about 1/2 the cost of a new iPad. You can get the glass replaced at 3rd party repair sources for less $, however, the Apple warranty will be voided.

This is totally fraud from the apple side. i had purchased an IPAD 2 for INR 36,000( USD 650 approx) six months back in India and along with that i had purchased Apple Ipad cover from the store for INR 3,000 ( USD 60) and from the day of purchase i put it in the cover.

Till yesterday evening after finishing my work i keep it on the table and now today morning when i tried to start it, it is displaying half screen and rest of the screen was black.

the external appearance of my Ipad is 100% scratchless.

When i went to the service centre, i conveyed the above situation to the engineer and after looking up at my ipad he noticed a very very small dent of 1 mm and they replied to me that i have to pay INR 18,500 (almost USD 370) in order to exchange this as they cannot repair it which is a total shock for me as inspite of the warranty and with no screen breaking no scratch how could they do like this.

Being that much big company it is totally a fraud... because their is no External problem of hardware in that and just a very minute pointing from the engineer leads to no use for me. They are just putting their hands back...

From this forum, i just want to request apple to kindly look into my problem ... because this is not the way of playing with the money of the customer.

Apple does not read this forum, only other users like yourself and we can't help you.

Call AppleCare in your country, ask to be transferred to customer service, and plead your case.

Be prepared to explain how the dent appeared on your iPad.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.

You also must admit to yourself that you were not dealiing with Apple in India. You were dealing with a 3rd party retailer/service provider and you were likely experiencing an aspect of your culture, not Apple policy.

Let's not forget, in the United States under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637) of 1975, that even if you have your iPad serviced elsewhere, that act alone cannot void the warranty. It's federal law that if you have a product serviced by someone other than the original dealer, the fact that the original dealer did not perform the repairs CANNOT void your warranty. Don't take my word for it. Look it up.

So you are saying that you can take it just anywhere and expect not to void the warranty? WHat makes just anyone qualified? What makes just anyone someone to whom the manufacturer must submit? There must be more to the law than you offer in your claim. Such as being a manufacturer authorized repair source.

Indeed not. The law was created because car manufacturers were requiring that all service had to be performed at a dealership, or authorized service center. The law basically banned this practice and opened up the market to free enterprise. Apple may SAY that it will void the warranty, but there is also a disclaimer that states that you may have other rights based on law. This is one of them. Like I said, check it out for yourself. Don't take my word for it.

Yes, but you are replacing it with a non apple part and doing a repair that apple does not do themselves. This will void your warranty since the item is no longer oem parts.

This recently happened to my sons' iPad he received for Christmas. First day out of the box and he dropped it on its face and cracked the screen. Went to the local Apple store and it was going to be about $250 to replace the entire unit. I then looked around for a place I could easily mail my sons' iPad into and found RepairZoom. I printed a label directly from their site and it was returned to me looking brand new in just a few days. Very simple process and looked incredible. They must do a lot of these repairs as they are so easy to work with and quick turn around. I noticed on their site they also repair iPods and iPhones. Very cool and a lot less money.

iPad 2's, in most other than Apple repair companies, don't cost too much to repair. Between 145 - 189.

I think a third party company is the way to go. I just found and used these guys to fix my sons broken ipad 2 i99Repair they only charge $79!

I think they are a new business or something as I couldn't find much info about the business but man I couldn't find any other business that could meet that price.
