Slow Rendering in iBooks. Normal with Retina Resolution?

Hi guys, iPad 3 user here. Okay, I do a lot of pdf reading on my iPad. To cut to the chase, when I touch or swipe for next page or previous page, I see tiles that are blurry which then turns clear. Is this kind of slow redering normal with the new high resolution screen? I do understand that there is 4x more pixels to push with almost the same cpu as the iPad 2. Logically, it makes sense it would be slower. I mean the pictures clear up after a second or so but I have grown to expect fast speeds with my iPad 2 before I sold it for the new one.

I would feel heck of a lot better knowing this is the status quo with the new iPad. If not, I am thinking of exchanging it for a new one.

FYI - The pdf's that are slow to render are mostly about 25 to 30 megs in size heavy with images. Text based books don't seem to lag as much.

Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't notice any difference in performance between by old first gen iPad and the new one. What you are describing sounds symptomatic of PDFs that are poorly optimized for online use.

James, can you tell me what I need to do to optimize my pdf's for "online" view? If it makes that much of a difference in rendering speed, I will need to update my pdfs.

Depends on the tool you are using to produce the PDFs. Consult your user guide for the settings.

Ill get back to you after trying that. It's just weird my iPad 2 didn't show any signs of such rendering issues with the same pdf file. Thanks!

oops - i accidentally clicked it solved my issue. can you please elaborate on this online pdf process? You're making things much harder for me right now lol.

I just called the store I purchased this from, MacMall and they confirmed that this is normal with the new iPad. They say they get this call quite a bit he has personally seen this on many new iPads. At this point, Im going to send my friend that pdf on the video above to see if it does the same thing.

As I said in the op, I just want to know if this is the norm with the new retina resolution and it seems to be normal. I guess that sorta makes me feel better. This was a big investment and I have come to expect great performance with apple devices.

ps - I will keep you guys updated after I give my friend the same pdf for his new iPad.

I know the same thing happens on the iPad 1 and I believe that it would also occur on the iPad 2 to some extent.

I believe it has something to do with the way images are being displayed in your PDF (progressive image rendering).

Hey thanks for the reply. I can understand iPad 1 having the issue as it has a significantly slower processor than both the iPad 2 and iPad 3. Later tonight, I am going to give the file to a friend who has an iPad 2 and we'll see what happens. The friend with the iPad 3 is not home right now. Once I get to test this on 2 other iPads, I will be much more at peace lol. I'll let you guys know, Thanks!

ps - I have another issue of browsers stuttering when I scroll. This is after I fully loaded the page and not while loading. Image heavy sites like The Verge or Engadget does that. It's odd tho that in Safar it seems fine which leads me to conclude it's bad programming in Atomic browser and Google Browsers part. Since this is another issue I'll make another thread on it later if need be.
