I downloaded and installed Message Beta.  All the entries are greyed out: Prefs, Accounts. So how does one correct this?  App from Apple should just WORK!

    Hi,

With the Finder as the "front" app and showing in the Menu Bar use the Go Menu.

In here hold down the ALT key (⌥) so that the ibrary appears in the Menu.

    Select the Library.

In here go to the Preferences

Find com.apple.imagent.plist and Drag it to the Trash.

    Restart Messages

That did not help at all. All menu items are greyed out.

    Hi,

    Now delete the com.apple.ichat.plist one.

    Restart Messages.

I tried that didn't work.  Message Beta created a new com.apple.ichat.plist. There were two plists with that name, the 2nd had the .lockfile extension.  I also deleted both, and both were recreated and the Message Beta still would not work.

In the Preference there are many ichat.plist files:

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist.lockfile

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist.lockfile

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist.lockfile

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.Yahoo.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.iChat.Yahoo.plist.lockfile

    Preferences/com.apple.iChatAgent.plist

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

The idea is that they are recreated.  If they are not there iChat (or Messages) will not work.

If they are not therer iChat/Messages will recreate them from Defaulsts held within the App itself - hopefully eliminating any erroneous info the .plist has picked up.

In iChat when you could not  acces the Preferences then the com.apple.ichat.plist tended to be the one to delete.

If that did not work then you delete *ichatAgent.plist.

iChat 6 and Messages use com.apple.IMAgent.plist and not the com.apple.ichatAgent.plist

The AIM, Jabber and Yahoo ones only handle the info about whether you are logged in or not.

The StatusMessages one only holds the Saved Status Messages you have created.

The Subnet one is aboout your Bonjour connection via iChat or Messages.

There is also a SharedFileList one that is created to hold the details of the "Recents Lists" that you have not listed.

    So...

You have the Message window showing but it is blank.

(if it does not show does it appear with the Keystroke listed in the Window Menu ?)

In the Messages Menu itself Preferences is grey out ?

If you were using iCHat before do the Accounts show as Logged in by appearing in the Window Menu with the Keystrokes and can you make them appear  ?

(This may depend on which Accounts are listed in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars for use with Messages.)

I am reluctant to say delete all the *iChat*.plists as it can be quite destructive

    Hi Ralph,

This whole crazy issue is NOT like any Apple apps I use every day.  Therefore I have reverted to iChat and will wait until Messages is no longer a BETA.

Thanks for your explaination. It may help others who have had my experence.
