My external hard drive stopped working and the disc utility can not recognize it either. Not sure what to do?

Drives die, likely what happend, try another computer/PC with MacDrive installed if formatted OS X only.

Just a guess. The WD externals are known for doing that. The drives themselves are good, but the chipsets in the enclosure are junk and prone to failure.
I'm not making promises, but there's a good chance that if you take out the drive and put it in a decent enclosure, all will be fine again.
