Similar issue with an old iMac I bought for my girlfriend on ebay.
Just inserted the wireless card I bought for it. The router is a british (BT Home Hub3) wireless N, the machine is an iMac G3 400Mhz running Panther, I'm guessing the same issue applies to set the router to WEP/WPA as currently I can't see it listed at all so cannot connect?

Original Airport is 802.11b, 11Mbits/sec, so you need your Router set for compatibility.

AirPort: Joining an encrypted WEP or WPA Wi-Fi network
If the router is N, unless it can be set to B, it won't work with the G3, which is limited to B. Defintely don't use WEP, which can easily be broken. WPA2/AES is the best, but WPA will probably be good enough.

Before I ramble here's the facts
Anyway I've done all the updates, and I can see the wifi router (and here's the catch) only when the imac is hardwired to the network. Currently wifi connectivity recognition even on the hardline is sporadic, and some say noise (bluetooth etc).
I know it's 802.11b, and I'm not expecting warp speed but is wifi connectivity going to be as flakey on a mac as it was on everything else of the era?

What do you mean by this?
Do you mean you used a ethernet cable to connect to you router? This should work without problems.
The biggest problem will be the age of your browser. The interent has changed a lot in the last few years.

What I mean is this. The wifi will only detect the router if the mac is plugged into the router directly via a cable.
The moment I pull the cable the signal stays for a few seconds then goes.
Weird, eh? It's like it needs the the hard line like an umbilical cord...
It is hard to get good reception within a few feet of the Router, You need to be a little farther away to really test it.
What IP Address do you get?
Tried the reception distance thingy, and sadly against all reason it works only sat right on top of the router and even then it has to be hardwired.
As for browser compatibility I came across this in the form of safari crashing every time I run it, so need to get Firefox on there.

For 10.3 you will be limitted to what browswers you can try. The newest version of Firefox for 10.3 will not surf the web that well. You need to be running Tiger to get a decent port of Firefox... TenFourFox.
I recommend one of these browser for 10.3.
