I fixed my new iPad's cracked screen under $20

So my new iPad has a crack on the boarder - to date we haven't figured out how it got cracked. Our 2 kids both claimed that they had nothing to do with it. The area is around one by half inch. A pea sized glass falled out and we couldn't find it. Around it is the typical spider web like cracks with the missing piece in the middle. Anyways I bought the Do-It-Yourself Windshield Repair Kit from Amazon and followed the instructions. The result is good but not perfect. From 5 feet away one will not be able to tell the crack. When look closely one can see the 2 cracked lines. I think it's because the crack is on the boarder, I can only use two out of four suction cups of the kit thus didn't provide enough pressure to drive the resin into the cracked lines. Also I didn't dare to put too much force on the razor to smooth out the hardened resin once it's dried so the cracked area is not as smooth as the rest. I am sure there could be glass polishing tools may make the result even better but at this point I am very satisfied on the result as there is no more hole on my iPad boarder 🙂

I did search on the internet and believed to date not many people knew and tried. Hopefully this can help unfortunate folks fix theirs if the crack is not too big.

A few tips -

1. My iPad is black and the crack exposed the metal liner beneath the black screen. I forgot to "black it out" using a permenant marker before the fix so after the fix one can see the metal liner in the area that was cracked. I then used a permenant marker on the hardened resin. The result is fine but could be better if I did it before apply the resin;

2. Make sure the cracked area is cleaned so there is no left over glass chips;

3. After apply the resin the iPad need to be exposed to direct sun for 15 minutes. The day I did it was not too hot so the iPad is fine. I wouldn't try it on a hot day.

It's funny how the exact same thing happened to us. My mom's ipad is below, and both of my brothers deny cracking it. I was thinking of trying your solution (which btw looks VERY good, considering). However the cracked is in the bottom right edge, near the speakers, so I am not sure if the repair kit would work since I don't want the resine to damage the speakers. I will do some research and see what I can do, but thanks for posting this. I'm sure it'll help many others 🙂
