Not connecting to itunes

I haven't been able to connect to iTunes with my iphone 4S. Thus, no syncing capabilities, at all. Another symptom is that my iTunes Store is completely blank. Does this have to do with iMatch or iCloud? My software is up to date on both my phone and my MacBook OS X 10.6.8

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1
