Interface?

I have a macbook pro OS X v. 10.5.8 and am trying to do some recording on the cheap. I downloaded Audacity, and have been told I need an interface to run a mic into the computer. What should I get? Is there another recording software available that's cheap or free, but better suited for my mac? Thanks!!!
