You need to restart the AMDS then. This explains how to do it.

Thanks...but, now when the IPad is "loading" under devices, the arrows just stop moving. The screen seems to lock up and my ITunes content never makes it to the IPad. Sorry for the "juvenile" terminology...I am a total tech idiot...I really appreciate the help!
It's OK. I'm pretty sure I understand what is going on.
Eject the iPad and then try rebooting your PC and the iPad as well. Reboot the iPad this way.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
I've now rebooted my PC and the iPad and it still got stuck, so I did a full Norton system scan - thinking maybe my PC was the problem - and it still freezes while loading the iPad to devices. Was I supposed to have done something to "remove" my original iPad before syncing the new one? (yes, unfortunately, I am that dumb about these things !!!) Again, thanks for any help....
No you don't have to remove the old iPad at all. That should not matter.
You did bring up an interesting point however. Try disabling Norton and see if you can sync. Something is preventing the connection between the iPad and iTunes so maybe Norton is the cause.
Try another USB port on your PC as well. Make sure that it is a port on the PC - not a hub or not on the monitor.
I've only got 1 USB port on my computer (older). Norton anti-virus and firewall are both disabled and now "Devices" doesn't even show up .... although I figure it would just lock up anyway!! If I hadn't promised the old iPad to someone I'd send this new one back ! At this point, Demo, should I start from scratch and uninstall iTunes again? I really appreciate your patience...
Actually, that was going to be my next suggestion. Try that and see if that helps.
This will explain how to remove and the reinstall iTunes, QuickTime and all of the components for Windows XP.
