How can i back up my iCal, there were times when i lost all my schedules

Hi, can anyone help me how i can somehow backup my iCal? i am new with my Mac and still learning and discovering. a few times i lost my schedules because though it was synchronized with googles, it did not save it there when i encountered some problems with my iCal due to server problems.
