assign static ip address can resolve ipad wifi connection problem...

until Apple fixes their crappy network codes and send us the update.

ipad cannot work correctly with router dhcp address assigned, and might cause other networked devices to fail. To fix this problem, assign a static address to ipad and this means ipad will always get the same ip address anytime it joins the same network.

In setting the static address, the most important info is ipad MAC address. in my router, i can check the list of attached devices, or at the address reservation screen. in ipad, it is wi-fi, select your network name, then dhcp tab. most of time, the ipad seems connected to network but cannot get to internet. Using static ip address can resolve the problem.

you have to do it in your router. first log in to your router. then find the mac address of your ipad, write it down. then go to your Dhcp setting, find the option about DHCP address assignment, select an IP address, enter the MAC address for that address. save the setting, and log out the router.

in your ipad network setting, make sure DHCP is checked, and clear all the static IP setting and info, and click OK.

now everytime you use your ipad with your home network, it will always get the same ip address. if you take it for a trip, it will still get different address from DHCP network.

hope this will help.

Hey kojenku,

Thank you for the fix.

I read almost all entries regarding to how to enter a static IP address. I completely understand how to enter the information but I feel like an idiot because I cannot figure out how to save this information.

I experienced the exact same symptom what many others with intermittent wi-fi connection and using a static IP seemed to solve it completely. BUT the lovely iPad just doesn't want to remember the configuration. Based on posts I've seen elsewhere, I believe that others are struggling with the same dilemma. It would be greatly appreciated if you could explain how to make the iPad to remember static IP settings.
THANK YOU

I followed your insturction and assigned a static IP in the router. So far so good.

I have multiple PCs and I use an iPad and an iPhone from Apple. I've always thought that Apple's GUI is more intuitive. I understand the router's role in the communication between network devices, but this IP configuration screen on the iPad boggles the mind. What the "Static" tab is good for, if it has noting to do with the static IP address, and why so many forum entries tell you that you need to use it for setting up a static IP? These are only rhetorical questions, though.

Thank you for your kind help!!!!!

You are misunderstanding what "static" means here. A static IP address is assigned in the device, not in the router. When you assign an IP address in the router, this is a "DHCP reservation." The router is reserving a specific IP address for a device specified by its MAC address. It is still a dynamic IP address, but it's the same dynamic IP address every time.

i remember that the static device ip address is assigned by the internet service provider. just call them, give them the device mac address, and they will give you the info. then enter the info in your ipad. i dont know if this is applicable to ipad, however.

in your case, i do not think this is necessary and DHCP address reservation will serve you just fine. i have two laptops and an ipad, i give each a perm dhcp address, and they are working perfectly even when each is streaming different contents.

frankly i am not pleased by ipad networking issues i have experienced, and i do think apple has paired first class hardware with 2nd or sub-3rd class software.

anyway, enjoy your ipad but my next tablet will not be another ipad.

The only (possibly static) IP address assigned by an ISP is for the WAN your ISP is providing to you. LAN addresses are under your control.

A static IP LAN address is self-assigned by a device on a network. If you want your iPad to have a static LAN IP address, you must

  • * clear out any reservations for that address in the router
  • * ensure the router does not reserve all addresses for DHCP
  • * clean information out of the DHCP and BootP tabs of the iPad network settings
  • * set the correct information in the Static tab of the iPad network settings. This is where you set the IP address you want the device to use, along with the network's subnet mask and other parameters.

That said, I have seen no evidence that there is any benefit to using a static address on an iPad.
