I received a Samsung HMX-W300 as a gift and was wondering if it's Mac compatible and would be able to transfer the files to Final cut or even imovie. Does anyone also know if the format on this is AVCHD?

I looked up specs on the net and found that is a Progressive shoot camera meaning it will not directly work with FCE.
You could convert the files with a third party converting application.

I'm assuming that what you said about progressive shoot camera is not the same as AVCHD? I'm kind of new to all these different HD format so if anybody can help explain this I'll appreciate it. Can you suggest any third party application?
AVCHD can shoot either Progressive or Interlaced footage.
Progressive means one full frame at a time is captured, 25 for PAL or 30 for NTSC.
Interlaced means two fields to make one frame, 50 fields for PAL or 60 for NTSC.
Lines 1,3,5,7,9 etc. scan first then 2,4,6,8,10 etc. hence interlaced.
