Unknown Mac App Store Update

This morning I start up the Mac App Store and see there are 2 updates available. One for an application I know I have, the other for an application I do not have installed on my system. Clicking "Update All" spins and does nothing. It looks to be attempting to download the update for the application I do have.

When I manually click on the application I do not, to see what is going on a App Store login comes up with the email address "***". I have seen another post saying this is due to installing non authorized Mac App Store applications but I have never done that. In fact I tend to be very careful about what I do install so I'm not sure whats going on.

It has this update for this application, not installed, never was and will not either go away or process the real update. I have restarted, cleared out the cache.

Sadly no I am still trying to find the culprit as to what is causing this. Everything I have read and everything people have told me leads me that this is due to some application on my system directly or an external drive. I have uninstalled all the applications that I have installed recently.

Then cleared my spotlight cache, ****, all caches but the problem persists. If there was a way I could track down which MAS reciept file contained the bunk information.

What I suggest if you have not done this yet, is investigate any application you have downloaded OUTSIDE the app store, it may have seemed free, or a trial, etc but contained a MAS reciept file which is causing the problem.

Is that because you only uTorrent everything?

annoying all-knowing Dah*veed insisting that there is a pirated app

He's been quite correct in his valid assumptions.

Baseless, unhelpful accusations are fun right?

In my case it was the other user of my computer which was still managing to affect my own App store. They had a "Worms" game and as soon as it was removed the problem went away.

Which means that you never met the criteria for having a pirated app. You did not have an app that you did not install yourself that was tied to the email address of a complete stranger.

You situation was different, it was involving an app installed by your co-worker. See you've been acting the fool and calling me names for no reason because you were ignorant of what it was that you were really going on and on about.

I was actually not even responding to you if you are talking about the above reply.

My point is there have been a lot of finger pointing in this thread which has gotten out of control and overall useless as a result. Not everyone who runs into this is an illicit pirate and instead of jumping to conclusions it would be best if we actually tried to help someone.

Helpful tips like:

1) This type of error can happen because of people on your computer with other accounts.

2) How do locate MAS reciept files to locate the application?

Instead of just saying, "your a pirate, do something about it" which is not helpful in the least.

It doesn't matter if you were responding to me, or if you were responding to someone else, you were still calling me names. The hosts of the Apple Support Community have removed your 2 comments in other threads where you were were calling me names.

No matter how many times you wish to state otherwise, when a user receives an update for a Mac app they have never installed on their Mac and that update is tied to the Apple ID of a complete stranger, that user has a pirated app. Period. End of conversation.

You just appear to want to fight, so move along, you've added nothing useful here.

I have never called you a name and if somehow you think I have then I apologize.

You just appear to want to call people pirates and offer no useful information as to how to track down these applications. Not everyone, as was the case for me, is a knowing pirate and could have used a litlte more help in tracking down w hat was going on.

Here is useful information, for example. If you are getting this type of error, if you are not sure which application is causing this you can track it down by searching for "_MASReceipt". Any one of these that appears in an application you did not download directly from the MAS is the culprit.

Solution 1 – Spotlight works but the index is incomplete or empty:

1) Open System Preferences > Spotlight
2) Under the Privacy tab. Add your Macintosh HD (or whatever your main hard disk is called) to the list.
3) Close the window. Wait a few seconds. Then go back to Spotlight settings and remove the entry you just added.
4) The spotlight index should now begin to re-index completely. (A dot will fade-in/out inside the Spotlight icon in the taskbar)
5) Wait for it to finish and then launch the Mac App Store. You should now see updates in the Updates tab.

Solution 2 – Spotlight indexing is disabled (frequent on Mac OS X Server)

1) Open a Terminal window.
2) Type the following command: sudo mdutil -i on /
3) A message saying “Indexing enabled.” should appear after a few seconds.
4) Close the Terminal window and the Spotlight indexing should now start automatically. (Again, a dot will appear inside the Spotlight icon during the indexing process)
5) Wait for it to finish and then launch the Mac App Store. You should now see updates in the Updates tab.
