Welcome to the Apple community.

It doesn't really matter whether you backup through iCloud or through iTunes on your computer. Messages (SMS, MMS and iMessages) are included in your backup.

I did a backup on iCloud and then iTunes and when I did a restore and then a backup, the only text messages I retrieved were from 3 months prior. Nothing after March to June.

Suggestions??
