Q: Secure link to iTunes Store failed

I can't log in or connect to iTunes store from my PC.  About two weeks ago I was watching movie on my AppleTV and all of a sudden it stoped in the middle of it and asaid I was not connected to iTunes.  Ever since then I cannot connect.  When I run diagnostics I get msg "secure link to iTunes Store failed" and when I click on the Help button it tells me that I am not connected to the internet.

That is not true as I can browse the net and I can even log into my accout on line but just cannot log in to iTunes or connect to the Store.  Please, help.

    Thanks Milo77,

    I did EXACTLY as you instructed in your post and it sorted out my problem straight away. I have been without a connection to the iTunes store for THREE YEARS, and have spent countless hours trying to solve the problem, with no luck until today!

    Many thanks,

    Thanks wiclee, you are a STAR. I did exactly as you said, with the added instructions from Milo77 and it worked a treat!  :-)

    This is what I did:

    Bring up Command Prompt:

    type cmd in the Run or Search field, then right-click the cmd program and click "run as administrator"

    Type the following commands:

    ipconfig /release

    Press Enter then type:

    ipconfig /renew

    /release will terminate all of your TCP/IP connections

    /renew will establish a new TCP/IP connection

    Then type the winsock reset command

    netsh winsock reset catalog

    It says that you will need to restart your computer for it to take effect, but I went ahead and started iTunes. iTunes gave me an error about the Bonjour service, clicked OK and I was able to connect to the iTunes store.

    I have been without a connection to the iTunes store for THREE YEARS, and have spent countless hours trying to solve the problem, with no luck until today!

    Many thanks to you Wiclee and to Milo77,

    Hello, Wiclee,

    I want to thank you for your solution to reset the Winsock!  So, "thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!" (Read in the grand style of Steve Martin.)

    Obviously, you're well-versed in iTunes solutions.  If it weren't for your generous gift of time and a desire to help others, our (users of iTunes) frustration level with glitches in iTunes would be danged near unbearable.

    My computer repairman installed iTunes himself, but it wouldn't work, and he turned the rest of the problem with a functioning product over to me after a full format and reload of my Win7 x64 OS.

    Where did you learn the most of your solutions, if I may ask?  It certainly can't be merely by trial & error.  You may have been one of the iTunes developers, your expertise is so great.

    from a "power user" of Win7

    Hi Wiclee;

         Seems you have several hints, Thank you very much, and i have tried them all.  Slight difference is i can connect to iTunes store but i cannot update my IPAD IOS [currently 4.3.5].

    When i click on DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL UPDATE I receive: System tries to connect to Server but returns a pop up window of:  iTUNES Update Server could not be Contacted

    I run the diagnostics and Fail ' Secure Link to iTUNES Store' test.

    The other tests for DEVICE pass.  I can backup and sync the iPAD with my PC.  DEVICE appears in iTUNES screen

    I get  'Connection attempt to Firmware Update Server unsuccessful' in the DETAILS report

    Running Win XP on my PC and trying all the steps logged in as admin.

    Have Cold restarted PC;

    Ran:  ipconfig / release and renew [ even though i was able to connect i did not think it was an ipconfig fault.]

    Ran the netsh winsock reset command;

    Ran Autoruns [ only have Bonjur from Apple listed].

    iTUNES is enabled in Windows Firewall,

    Have SSL 2.0;3.0 and TSL1.0 enabled in Internet Options Security.

    I have read and attempted the APPLE KB tips.

    Any more suggestions?  Thanks for your input.
