How can I retrieve music from my pc not purchased from iTunes?

I now have I pad 2 and I phone 4S and would like to sync the music. I also want to put on some stuff I loaded onto the pc ( Sony not Apple)via cd years ago. The pc is a pain for losing iTunes libraries and IM wondering whether to re install iTunes altogether and start from scratch. help!
