Adobe Reader system error (-1409)

Whenever I attempt to install ANYTHING, Adobe Reader gives the message "There was a system error opening this document. There was a Macintosh system error (-1409). How can I stop this from happening? If it helps, I have OS X v10.6.8 on my Macbook.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

-1409 means "named fork does not exist". That may mean you are trying to run, say ppc code and you don't have Rosetta installed, or 64-bit code and you are running 32-bit mode, Basically a code resource that is required but not there. Are you sure you have the latest Adobe Reader. You get it from here. That version of Reader is i386 only so it should run in 32-bit or 64-bit mode.

Default installer? Was that your problem. Adobe Reader is being launched when you click .pkg installers?

The default for for handling a .pkg's is Installer.app located in /System/Library/CoreServices. Do a finder Get Info on a .pkg. If the Open With does not say Installer.app, and Installer.app is not on the Open with popup menu where you could select it, then select Other on the popup menu and navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices. Then click the Change All button in the Get Info window. Now Installer will be the default for .pkg's.
