If the Mac is connected to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, the backup will proceed on average at about 30-35 GB per hour.
So, if you have 100 GB to backup, the process will be approximately 3 hours.
Bets are off with a backup using wireless, but it will likely be at least 3-4 times longer than the wired Ethernet connection.

I am not using a Time Capsule. I am using an external hard drive. Also, the initial backup was interrupted.
Is the external hard drive attached directly to your Mac using a FireWire or USB connection?
If not, how is it connected?
Yes, the external hard drive is attached directly to my Mac.
It is unusual that a backup would be interupted with the drive directly connected to your Mac. Start the backup again to see if it will complete.
