Cannot get audio from itunes to my stereo, please help

I have tried connecting my TV to my stereo (which is a basic old Rotel with only phono inputs). I've tried all the audio out options on the TV but no matter which I use, I can get the TV through my steroe, but not the music from iTunes. Do I need to use the digital optical output on the Apple TV and can a simple lead take the digital optical signal to my stereo. If not, what's the simplest and indeed cheapest way to do this?

AppleTV 2, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Welcome to the Apple community.

Unless the TV is able to convert Digital to analogue audio, which is not very likely, then yes you will need a DAC. You also need to ensure that your TV has an optical output, otherwise you will have to take your digital output from the Apple TV itself.

You will need a DAC something like the one provided in the link below, however for the avoidance of doubt I am not particularly recommending this model.
