Sometimes you can do that by touching and holding the item in Safari and you should get a popup of where to download it. It will not go into your podcast library. To get items in your podcast library you have to downnload it through the iTunes store.
When I open Safari, I get the BT Fon hotdpot page and do not know how to use it for downloading podcasts. As you can see, I am a beginner.
If when you touch the podcast you do not get an download option that that site does not support the iPod downloading it.
If the podcast is avaialbe in iTunes, why not just use that.
there are apps tha may work. One is
http://appshopper.com/news/icatcher-a-podcast-catcher-app
(at least in USA)
That app says:
Adding Podcasts
+ Built-in search to find your favorite podcasts
+ Manually add podcasts with a URL
+ Browse the web in the app to find podcasts to add. Browser will prompt if you tap a link that is a podcast feed.
yes, the podcasts are available on itunes, but I want to download them to my ipod to use when out walking, not download to my computer - which seems to be my only option at present. I cant help feeling I have configured the ipod incorrectly or not made the correct connection with itunes.
Some of this may depend on which country you are in. The BBC has different rules for the UK or non-UK, some things available to non-UK residents are not available to me, here in the UK.
If you are in the UK, you can search for BBC Podcasts in the iTunes Store (you do not need a Store account for Podcasts). In your iTunes, go to the iTunes Store/Podcast section and search for BBC. There are a lot. If you see the one you want, simply click on Subscribe (to that Podcast).
You can go to the BBC website in your browser and find the programme that you are interested in, but frankly, it's a long-winded process. It's quicker to search for the progamme in the Store. To subscribe to the programme Broadcasting House, I took the following steps:
On this page; http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/help is a guide from the BBC to Podcasting. In particular, notice in the FAQs a question "why are some Podcasts only available in the UK?"
Aha! I've just seen your extra bit,

Connect the iPod to iTunes. Look on the Device/Podcasts pane and check the aat you have iTunes configured to Sync your Podcast.
Thank you fiend. You said the process on the BBC website is tedious. I have been using it to download podcasts to my Olympus mp3 player successfully for over a year, and do not find it too tedious - if one can bear to wait a couple of minutes for the download.I shall give your email another close reading and try to follow the advise you offer.
