Volume

I have been a long time iPad user. I recently moved up to the new iPad and I keep adjusting the volume by some type of gesture I am doing by touching/holding the edges of my iPad yet I cannot quite figure out how. In other words it just happens randomly and accidentally. Can someone please help me understand how it works.
