Trackpad

Im running MS OX 10.5.8 and just bought a trackpad. My Mac can find it on bluetooth, offers me a password but then it won't connect, what am I doing wrong?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Many thanks for swift reply, I did as you suggest and downloaded 10.6.4 but then I get a box which states this is not supported on my machine?

Snow Leopard (10.6) can't be downloaded, it's only available on DVD.

Here are the requirements:

General requirements

Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
