ipod classic vs ipod nano

I am thinking of buying either the ipod classic or the ipod nano 6th generation but i don't know which one. I was hoping to learn about these devices from their users before i purchase one. I know that both ipods are different and unique in their own way and that is why I don't know which one to choose!! I would appreciate any help!! thank you in advance 🙂 ....

Considerations are capacity, price, screen size, lifestyle, known issues.

How big is your music/media library? The Classic has a max capacity of 160GB vs the Nano 16GB, some people use the classic as a Music datastore, which I think is not a good idea, as there are hundreds if not thousands of reported iPod hardisk crash, and some people erase the music library in their PC, thinking that the iPod classic is sturdy and reliable. (just read these discussion on Sync issue)

  • Price - Nano is half the price of the Classic.
  • Screen size - Nano screen is too small for video
  • Nano has FM Radio.
  • Battery life (when new) - Classic has about 40 hours of continuos music per full charge, where Nano has about 24 hours of continuos music.
  • Nano has no moving parts, hence more sturdy and reliable.

However if you want a sturdy device, with big screen, and more functionality, get the iPod Touch, it is double the cost of the Nano if you get the 32GB Touch.

For better comparison, read thisApple specs

You are most welcome!, but you misunderstood me, I meant, a lot of other people think that the classic is sturdy and reliable, but actually, there is a high incidents of sync failures, after the 1st year, due to hardisk problem.

But if you are not carrying the Classic around, jogging or rollerblading, or doing the french running thingy but instead put it in a nice cool hall, connected to a stereo dock, it will last a long time, (more than 5 years for me.) before you need to replace the hardisk.

Yes, iTunes for Windows, seems to have a lot of posts on syncing problems, even for new iPod Classic.

Have a nice day! hopefully the other contributors, will put in their experience.

I never mentioned ipod touch because I have the iphone 4s so I do not want something similar and i am searching for a device in which i will store only my music! i see that you prefer the ipod nano but i think i will go with ipod classic because of the storage, because is sturdy, reliable and has great battery life like you said and thank you for mentioning not to use the classic as music datastore because i think this is the reason for crashing. plus 16G are not enough and because I do not have mac but pc i don't want to constantly connect it with itunes to change the songs because itunes in a pc are pretty much annoying and slow!!! thank you for your help it really helped me realise what I want 🙂
