Airport cannot connect to wireless network requiring password.

Recently purchased a mobile hotspot. My laptop cannot connect to it. Radio Shack says this laptop can't connect to any network requiring a password. Would an upgrade of the OS fix this? I am using OS 10.4.11.

Power Mac G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

That's odd ... my Powerbook G4 with both Tiger and later Leopard has for years connected to a password-required wireless network. Does the mobile hotspot have any special connection requirements? For example, does it require Snow Leopard 10.6 or Leopard 10.5 for a mac connection?
