If the tab is blocking the DIMM contacts, I would say this is a manufacturing error, unless your machine has been stripped down and rebuilt incorrectly.

I would contact Apple Tech Support and ask their advice.

The tabs are there for the removal of DIMM cards and should not interfere with the contacts.

If your machine has been away for repair and has been rebuilt incorrectly, the repair centre which carried out the repair should be your port of call. If you get no luck from them, then contact Apple Tech Support.

The tabs are for pulling out the RAM... but they are not supposed to obstruct the DIMM contacts (unlike some battery bays).

Instead they are attached to a mechanism behind the DIMM which pushes the RAM clear of the slot, so when inserting RAM you need to make sure the tab isn't in the way, then tuck it in afterwards:

If you've forced the tab into the DIMM slot with the RAM then you need to carefully remove it from that slot and then hold the tab out of the way as you slide the RAM in. Then tuck the tabs in afterwards like in the above picture.

Thanks- when you look at it with a torch you can see that it is affixed to the wrong side of the slot so it lies across the contacts so that the DIMM can't connect. So my instinct was that it is a manufacturing error. So will contact Apple support and trek into my nearest apple store. Very tedious!

    Thanks for  this.

I did all my reading before I started so I knew  that the tabs are for pulling out the RAM... the way the tab in the empty slot  is attched is differnt to the other slot  and although  the tab end can be pulled when you look in the slot with a torch you can see that it is affixed to the wrong side of the slot so it lies across the contacts so that the DIMM can't connect. So my instinct was that it is a manufacturing error. So will contact Apple support and trek into my nearest apple store. Very tedious!

I thought I would just say  that I went to  th genius bar and we realised  that  the ribbon in question is a double ribbon that is stuck to itself- with no DRAM in  the slot it had opened out-hence covering  the slot. The man  at the genius bar found some long tweezers and managed to get the two bits of riboon stuck together again and all is now well and 4GB dram now in place.
