I setup Gmail as my default email and everything works fine except it doesn't show my contacts when I compose an email. To get around this I also added my yahoo account and in the mail settings under my yahoo account I unchecked all the boxes except my contacts. Now when I compose a Gmail email it will show my contacts. My question is why doesn't my contacts show up with just having my Gmail account setup? Do I have to leave it this way for it to work correctly?

I think my problem is I set it up as a Gmail account and need to do it as Microsoft Exchange.
This 'trick' no longer works in iOS5.1 I believe.
So is my only choice to leave it the way I have it set now as it does work this way but thought I could do this with just the Gmail account.
I deleted my Gmail account and set up my Gmail through Microsoft Exchange. The contacts now work normal but I'm not sure if I like Microsoft Exchange. I will give a test period and if I don't care for it I will just go back to my old Gmail setup.
You need a real Microsoft Exchange account now.

Yes, Exchange accounts are not free. They're accounts created by organisations or companies who pay the licensing cost to Microsoft for the service.
You can set up Gmail asn an Exchange account. It's not a "trick" and it works just find under the current version of the system software. Here are the instructions:

That's the procedure I used as someone linked it on a different thread I found. Like I said, it works fine but when viewing my Gmail through the ipad it does not show any content in my personal or receipts folder.Does this info have to be synced over some how?

The screenshots are iOS4, not 5.1. I believe it's a backdated set of instructions. You can no longer do that workaround and it is a 'trick'. You need an Exchange or give Apple some feedback about their products at, you may want to specifically mention the details about contacts.:

I'm new with this so bare with me. By following the instructions I do get my Gmail fine but it just doesn't show any info within any of my personal or receipts label folders. But if I access my Gmail account from the web all my info shows up there like it should.
Set it up as Gmail, you'll get the labels and receipts. To look for the folders (Mail App treats all labels as folders), hit the back button which leads to "Mailbox" go to Gmail, locate your labels.
The usual place it goes to is the Inbox section. So just follow the above instructions, you'll probably see it. Also, by setting up the account as a Gmail, you do not need to enter details of the servers, it's just entering your user ID and password.

No!!! This is entirely incorrect information. GMail works just fine as an Exchange account (still does) and it is not a "trick" because Google has their own version of Exchange that is iOS compatible. I use this daily on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 -- believe me, I'd know if it wasn't working!

iOS 5.1? The "Known" issues tab in the Google KB also states that there are compatibility issues with iOS5 in some areas. I do understand that Google Sync is the Exchange equivalent, but it is just an equivalent.
