Shift + 3.
On which keyboard layout?
Do you mean how to type # symbols?
Shift-3 produces £ on a UK Mac.
Option-3 produces #.
Any use?
Yeah, that was a US Keyboard, I don't know international
Thank you everybody who tried to answer my question the Option 3 worked a treat. I have a UK Mac Book Pro, I just love it, but parts of it are still a mystery, but I can honestly say I won't ever be buying a PC again.
Is there somewhere on the web or Apple's support site that I can refer to for these special symbols? I have purchased a couple of app video's to help me understand Lion and Mac, and they have been great, I love the shortcuts and I am really getting into them, but there was nothing about accessing symbols that are not on the keyboard.
Thanks again for the help. I spent best part of half a day trying to get a #😉 I will just come here again.
Go to System Preferences - > Keyboard. You should see at the bottom a line with "Show keyboard ... in menu bar ..." or something like this (I don't know the English text, I am using the German language). Mark it. Now you have an icon in your menu bar. Click on it and you can see all the symbols and characters and where there are located on your keyboard.
If you open Terminal and issue the following command (copy and paste the line below)
open /System/Library/Input\ Methods/KeyboardViewer.app
press return, that launches the Keyboard Viewer application that let you visually see the hidden character available, based on your keyboard layout.
Thank you, fantastic, a whole new area has just opened up including smilies
this helped as well, but I prefer the little keyboard on my menu tab, makes for easy access. Thanks again, This community is wonderful, if I get stuck again, I will definately come here. does Apple pay you money for solving all these problems, if not they should it must save them loads on time.
There are lots of informations on Apple - Support page.
Another smart place to visit is lynda.com where you can find great video tutorials

In Lion you just hold the key until the special characters come up. You can find the special characters on the Character viewer (and set them there in favorites) too. You can set the character viewer in your menubar via SystemPreferences/Keuboard.
You are right. ecpa suggestion is more practical but I was in a hurry. Lunch was ready 😀

Nobody here receive a penny from Apple. Apple just hosts the forum.
All forum participants share their experiences freely.
Sorry, which key would you hold down?
It was a little tongue in cheek, the quip about payment. I was so impressed with knowledge and expertise. Sorry British humour.
any key on the keyboard: try the e for example and hold it. In an app where you can type, of course.
