lpd printing paused

Before updating to 10.7 , i was able to print to a network printer by doing this:

  1. System preferences from the  menu
  2. Print and Scan or print and fax from the View menu
  3. the + button to add a printer.
  4. IP from the Type pop-up menu.
  5. Line printer daemon – LPD from the protocol list

6. In the address field type the printer you which to use in these formats

username@its-pharos3.ds.strath.ac.uk

Queue: Acetate (for acetate)

Queue:Black%20and%20White (black and white)

Queue: Colour (Colour)

7. Then Click on ADD

8. On the installable options dialog click on “duplex printing”

Continue

Now under 10.7 all that happens is the job is sent and then comes back as queue paused. Whats gone wrong?

Usually into the address field you must type the IP address of the printer not the e-mail address.

It is not the email address. The username in front of the @ symbol indicates the Windows account name that the print queue is to be authenticated with. And the information after the @ would be the FQDN of the printer, which is called "its-pharos3".

The issue could be that for LPD print queues you usually don't need to authenticate to the Windows server. So one suggestion would be to create the LPD queue again but don't enter the username and @. Just enter the FQDN of the printer or the IP address as you mention.

If authentication is required then the syntax shown above is typically used for SMB connections. To create an SMB queue with authenitcation information you have to add the Advanced menu to the Add Printer toolbar. With the Add Printer pane open, control-click in the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar from the menu that appears. Then drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and OK the change. Now you can click the Advanced icon and select "Windows printer" for the Type and in the URL field, after the smb://, add your information as you have done before.
