(1) Skype can.
For Skype-specific problems like this, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
Start here: https://support.skype.com/
For help connecting: https://support.skype.com/en-us/faq/FA10038/Why-can-t-I-sign-in-to-Skype-for-Mac
For help updating: https://support.skype.com/en-us/search?q=update+Skype+for+mac+os+x+
You can even search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac. The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.
If nothing else works, you can even sign in and ask for email help directly from Skype's Technical Support people.
(2) If you are having trouble with any other connected functions on your system, it is possible that rebooting the modem/router might help. Try shutting down EVERYTHING and rebooting the entire system. Restart your modem first. Let its self-test finish before you restart your router or wireless access point (if you use one.) Let that self-test complete before restarting your Mac.

May 2, 2012 9:56 AM in response to macfrombramptonby tominsand,I'm not able to run any version as the download results in a dmg of version 5.2.59.1037 dated 12/4/12 placed in my download folder and when I select it all I get is a folder placed on my desktop titled Skype with a no entry sign.
I have downloaded other applications since my Skype problem started e.g. Firefox and cleanmymac that install perfectly!!
Still can't get Skype to load and still out of visual contact with family and friends GRRRRRRRR! HELP anyone

May 2, 2012 6:41 PM in response to tominsandby macfrombrampton, since your skype version is not the latest, does it ask to be updated? If not perhaps there is a network problem as it should advise you of the latest network version which appears to be Skype_5.7.0.1037.dmg.
