Transferring video file from iMac to iPad3 & Which are the video formats runs in iPad?

Hey friends,

- I just brought my iPad3 and I am trying to copy couple of videos from my iMac. I tried home sharing through iTune but sadly it is not happening. Can some one help me on transferring video files from iMac to iPad3.

- I also would like to know which are the video formats which runs in iPad3. I have few .AVI files with me. Is there any app you would suggest to run these video files?

Thanks in advance. 🙂

might even want to download it so you can have it handy.

TO get files onto the iPad you can try importing those video files into iTunes, then syncing them with your iPad.

If you need to convert file types, Handbrake and mpegstreamclip are two free programs that convert video quite well.

Pad2, the new iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats

  • H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
  • MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
  • Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.

Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).

Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

 Cheers, Tom 😉

That seems like a lot of expense and toss when there are a number of fine inexpensive video apps for iPad which can play many more file types than that and can be populated with videos over wi-fi or the simple USB cable that ships with the iPad using File Sharing in the Apps pane in the iTunes app on a computer.

I happen to use VLC 1. Unfortunately this app's developers had a melt down over distributing VLC through iTunes and one of them countermanded the others and demanded Apple remove VLC from the store. I got it before it was removed. Many folks are hoping that the developers can solve their personal issues and that VLC 2.0 will soon be in the iTunes App Store.
