Where are older iMac specs?

I was looking for the Apple specs on the iMac G5's. So I went to http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html and all they list is iMac's from 2003.09 and then they jump to 2006.01. What happend to the specs for the three generations of the iMac G5's?????

It has been suggested in the past that certain things get updated there without much success. They haven't updated the eMac or Mac Mini specs accordingly either. There are important distinctions I've found in both models that those pages don't specify. For ones that lack info, I use the identify your Mac articles as well as third party sites.

http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#IDENTIFY

are the articles I've found which are helpful.

Disclaimer: Reference to links I make to my Macmaps.com website are a for your information only type reference. I do not get any profit from this page, and it is open to the public.

Hi J.

Yes, its actually very annoying and often makes it harder to actually provide people with good answers here. It applies to various models other than the iMac as well. Essentially in recent times the relevant specs page at http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html has dropped models as soon as they are superceded. Paradoxically you can still get information on all of the older machines, right back to the "classic Macs" of the mid 80's through the page at http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.legacy/index.html !

I've been told a review of the process has been fed into the pipeline but some more support certainly wouldn't hurt. You might want to try posting in http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076 and sending a message indicating your own concern about the matter to http://www.apple.com/support/feedback/ Be nice. I'm told that there are some "technical difficulties", but its been an issue here for much too long now.

Its even more confusing than that sometimes, Chris. On occasion the dates shown on the applespec page haven't actually meshed with the particular model that the specs are for.

This was a very serious issue when the "Rev A" imac G5 was replaced by the "ALS" model. The dates on applespec remained the original ones, but the spcs were those of the the ALS model, with its "autoswitching" power supply not found on the earlier model sold in US and Japanese markets. A person with a US "Rev A" model reading the specs could have easily assumed that they could plug into a 240 Volt socket, with devastating consequences.

I'd always been very impressed with the way that Apple kept specs on their older models available over many , many, years, and its has been immensely useful when trying to help users of older Macs, but this is no longer the case. We've gone from "best in the field" in this area to something far less satisfactory, I'm afraid. Seems very silly when it should be such a simple thing to resolve.

Use http://www.apple-history.com/ to determine the release dates of your Mac, or the identify your iMac article to determine how to tell an ALS iMac G5 apart from the first repelase of the iMac G5. Once you know whether or not you have an ALS or not, use the http://web.archive.org/ to look up http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html page during the time period of your Mac to learn about its individual specs.

look up http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html page during the time period of your Mac to learn about its individual specs.
The info is NOT available on this page (as previously stated) no matter how you try to look it up.
It only lists the iMac (Intel) and iMac G5 (current iSight.)
It lists all the previous iMacs (except Rev A&B.)
I don't need to know where this info is (I have it) but was pointing out it is not where it should be.
It should be in the same place as all othere similar info.

Hi chris,

I'm sure a. brody doesn't disagree with you that the specs should be easier to access, but I don't think you are quite following what he is suggesting. He isn't suggesting that you head for the earlier iMac specs on the apple site, but rather on the repository of old websites held at http://web.archive.com called the "way back machine"

Head to http://web.archive.org/web/20050401024940/www.apple.com/imac/specs.html and you will find the "Rev A" iMac G5 specs.

( http://web.archive.org provides access to out of date sites over many years)

Unfortunately the archive of Apple pages stops on April 1st, 2005, just before the specs of the ALS model appeared, but at least it provides those for the "original" model.

Cheers
