Trusteer Rapport

We keep getting requests to upgrade our Trusteer Rapport program. It says this protects against phishing attacks and provides credit card theft protection. Is this necessary? Do you recommend it? Thanks, Brurot

As noted in several posts, Trusteer Rapport is an anti-malware program that evaluates the legitimacy of websites and supposedly protects the user from intrusion. Rapport is strongly advised by many banks, and it is possible that some require its use, because if a user's bank account is accessed fraudulently, it is the bank that is on the hook, not the user, just as would be the case if the bank cashed a forged check. Banks may at some point insist on proof of use of Rapport or similar programs so that if a customer's account was raided AND the customer was not using Rapport, it would be the customer who was on the hook. I have had some serious issues with Rapport, principally in conflict with Intego's VirusBarrierX6. My Intel desktop Mac running OS10.6.8 (I am too chicken to try Lion or Mountain Lion yet) would hang if both programs were running, and perhaps if I was doing a data upload to my campus server. What I now do is use Rapport only when I am accessing my bank's website. There is a Rapport icon in System Preferences (you have to click once, wait for an error message, then click it again). When the Rapport page opens you can activate/deactivate it. I also avoid Rapport if I am doing any virus scans with VirusBarrierV6 or heavy uploads. Hope this info helps.

If you install it you can expect all sorts of annoying behaviour, then go to Trusteer site for help, you will get endless frightfully polite suggestions getting you nowhere and wasting a lot of time. Instant cure for everything is to remove it. The company must have a lot of influence in the financial world. Strange.
