Exchange Contacts won't sync to Address Book

I configured Lion 10.7.3 to sync mail, contacts, and calendar with my corporate Exchange 2010 server. Mail and iCal sync fine. But Address Book shows a blank Exchange Contacts list. The Mail app Show Addresses dialog also shows a blank Exchange Contacts list. I have no problems syncing 450+ Exchange Contacts to other devices including iPhone. I tried deselecting and re-selecting Exchange Contacts in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Exchange. Same results, blank Exchange Contacts list.

Console Diagnostic and Usage Messages shows several incidents of this message. This might be normal. I see similar entries for iCal, which sync'd fine.

com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.exchange.serverVersion

com.apple.message.result: noop

System.log does show this iCal error. SImilar reports in old forum posts describe problems with iCal handling recurring calendar events. This problem is hopefully unrelated to the blank Exchange Contacts list.

How can I resolve this problem?

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum and I'll try to post my work around. I had the same issues with my contacts. In my web version of exchange I created a new group. Moved all contacts to this new group. restarted the contacta app. Now I have all my contacts back on my Mac. You can offcourse create multiple groups. Not really an anwser to why it didn't work before, but at least it works now.

Hi all, I had the same problem: only new/updated contacts synced to my Mac Contacts (both Maverick and Yosemite OS), while all synced perfectly well on iOS devices. The workaround above did not work for me because my O365 web client does not allow the Select All function for Contacts/People (I should have gone 1 by 1).

However it gave me an idea for another workaround. In an Exchange client (e.g. Outlook on Windows, or Outlook for Mac which I will take as an example here) go to Contacts -> Select All -> right-click and Categorize to any dummy value. This will trigger an update of all Contacts on server, and will then sync properly with Mac Contacts. You can then remove your dummy Categories. It works well now.

So, had the same problem with Yosemite on a Mac Pro. It had worked well for me before on a Macbook Air.

Here's what I did that worked for me:

Setup Exchange on Mail

Turned off iCloud contacts on Iclouds again (which I never used but was on)

Turned off and turned "Contacts" on again on Exchange account settings.

After that, they started to come in... I think iCloud was interfering with it somehow...

So, give it a go!

I wanted to chip in my $0.02 worth here.

I was also having some trouble getting contacts from Exchange to show up in contacts. Contacts was showing entries on my mac itself as well as iCloud, but exchange was hidden.

I went to View->Show Groups and sure enough it should our exchange server, but there was a faint delta symbol with an exclamation point in it. It was very faint, almost appeared greyed out.

But I clicked on it anyway, and a dialog popped up indicating that Contacts needed to know if it could trust the exchange server. I said yes, and it immediately started loading contacts, and they became visible.

I was having this problem (contacts on an Exchange server not showing in Contacts 9.0 on El Capitan) and solved it using the following method. So far I've found zero negative repercussions. Everything is working fine with Contacts now. Note: I was able to search and find the Exchange contacts with Spotlight and I was successfully seeing contacts stored in iCloud.

1. Close Contacts.app

2. Open a Finder window and navigate to ~/Application Support/AddressBook. Where ~ is the home directory of the Contacts.app user.

3. Move all file in the AddressBook folder to trash. You can copy the folder to a backup location first if you are nervous.

4. Restart Contacts.app

Assuming all your contacts are still on your servers (i.e. Exchange, iCloud, etc), the contacts.app will recreate all the necessary files you deleted in the AddressBook folder and you will be able to sync again. Apple support had told me that this was an Exchange server problem, but I was able to see my Exchange based contacts on my iPad and iPhone without a problem. I'm assuming one of the database files in the AddressBook folder was corrupt and erasing and recreating it fixed the problem.
