Can't activate IPhone 4S

Hi everyone,

My mum bought me an Iphone 4S in duty free in South Korea airport, she was told it was unlocked, however, when I tried to activate it with my Kazakhstan sim card, it said that I had to use sim card of certain providers. I've checked the model's number in the Internet (MD237C/A), and from what I've learnt my Iphone is supposed to be unlocked. Does anyone know what I should do now? I really don't want to jailbreak it or whatever as I heard that most phones go a bit crazy afterwards. Any help will be appreciated!

Have you tried connecting it to iTunes to set it up once the SIM card is in? Chances are it's GSM-system is incompatible with Kazakhstan's cellular network. If you have a local Apple Store you could try taking it there; otherwise you should send Apple your Model Number because they'll be able to see if it is unlocked or not.

If all else fails, you have a fancy iPod touch!

The problem is we don't have an official Apple store in Kazakhstan, so basically everyone buys it elsewhere. I've tried to connect it to Itunes now, tells me the same thing - the sim card does not appear to be supported. Do you happen to know if Apple can unlock it for me if I send them the IMEI code, I've seen such information on other forums? Thank you!!

Apple, like all cell phone manufacturer's do not unlock devices.

Only the carrier to whom it is locked can unlock it. You will need to contact the carrier to whom it is locked and find out their unlocking policy. This is one of the many reasons why it is not a bright idea to buy from unauthorized sources.

His SIM card is from Kazakhstan, so even if it IS locked to a network in Kazakhstan it doesn't explain why he is having a problem. Amzhan, I recommend you check if your Carrier supports iPhone 4's, find out on which network some of your fellow iPhone user's are and what they did to activite their phones. Jailbreaking sort of ruins the real iPhone experience for me, but if you have no other option...
