Due to assorted probs, was forced to erase my entire hard drive and reinstall everything. When I tried syncing both my iPhone 3G) and iPad (2), message said contents were already on another computer and couldn't be on two. Obviously reinstall makes my Dell XPS 8000, running Windows 7, 64 bit, look different. How do I get back to my iTunes library and resync?

Your iTunes library is gone; however, your purchased items will remain associated with your Apple ID. You can always synch to the new machine, albeit you'll lose your previous iTunes Library items not on your new machine or associated with your Apple ID.
Look in iTunes under purchased and see what items you own, and you'll see what items you'll lose.
So all the music currently on my two devices, iPad and iPhone, a lot. cannot be restored to iTunes?
I also have it "backed up" on Dell's DataSafe.
Also, what about resyncing all my contacts, etc.. ?
Did you re-authorize your computer in itunes? itunes still thinks your setup on your old operating system.
Not 100% sure but I believe I did.
I think I authorized it as a new computer ?
I had to just do the same thing to my wife's computer last week. After adding the fresh copy of windows 7, downloaded the latest itunes and authorized her computer and synced here ipod, all was fine.
Reinstalled windows 7, downloaded iTunes, attempted to sync and the message was: can't sync when music is on another computer. Looks like you can take off your iTunes library but I'm trying to get all my music back into the library from the iPad

This is the only computer you had your music on? If it is then I would de-authorize all computers and start over and then re-authorize your computer. I never de-authorized my wife's before clearing the hard drive and when I authorized it again it said this was my second authorization and have no issues.
Computer, yes. It was backed up in Dell DataSafe and it is duplicated on my iPhone and iPad but I want the restored computer to be my main source and to return the contents of the portable devices to iTunes. ( so I can regularly sync as I used to,)

That's not what it says.
It says, "The iPad, wiwmd's iPad, is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPad and sync with this iTunes library?"
You need to restore your iTunes library.
Simply copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from the most recent backup to /Music/ on your computer.
Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, that's exactly what it said! I downloaded from the Dell DataSafe a multiGig file with I believe all my music in it. Is there a way to put it back in my iTunes library so I can resync t he whole again regularly as I used to?
You need to find the file that itunes music is on and copy it into your itunes. Is all the music you had in itunes on your ipod? If so, why don't you sync that to itunes as this is all I did with my wife's.
As you can see from Chris CA's reply, it won't let me!
I did back her's up to an external drive. I must have moved her music folder over when I was moving over other files of her's, then connected her ipod. I guess you will need to find the file that contains your music.
