Opening an xls file in Numbers

Numbers does not properly open an XLSX file but MS Excel for Mac does. I can, however, open the file with Preview and it displays properly. The problem appears to just in formatting the colums as the data appears as dates instead of numbers.

It seems that I can change the format to other date styles but unable to change it to numbers or text. I tried using th Inspector and the format does change somewhat but remains a date. The date BTW is based on days after 1900.

I suppose that if I fumble around enough I should be able to come up with a solution but what troubles me most is that Preview and MS Excel open it correctly to begin with while Numbers does not.

The first colum "Date" is okay but all other data should be just numbers

I don't have MS Excel on this computer (iMac) but I did open the XLSX on my friends Macbook Air with Office 2011 and it did open the file okay. If I open the file with Numbers and then save it as an Excel document, it changes all colums to numbers - including the date colum.

At this point I am giving up. It is far easier for me to send the file from my iPhone to my computer as a CSV and wotk with it in Numbers that way.

Wayne, I appreciate your help, but I am spending more time on this than I care to. The problem somehow lies in the header and that is an Apple problem. If I really wanter to work with an XLS file I will install MS Office on this Mac, but for now I am happy with the CSV file.

Thanks again

Ken

Ken,

I don't have excel either. You mentioned excel and left out the details:

1) you want to use Numbers

2) you don't have excel

3) you tried once an a friends computer

Providing a good problem statment and details is important. Usually we try things before reponding to see if we can figure out what you are asking then we ask questions.

What I want to see is what the actual data looks like before being distorted by conversion to dates. If you do not want to pursue no problem. I am just trying to point out that you and I have spent several exchanges without getting anywhere because of imcomplete information. Not trying to beat you up or point fingers just trying to help you understand how details matter and can speed up or slow down this process.

Your problem is tractable but I still don't kow what the data looks like. I can guess since you are entering Blood Pressure and Heart rate. But I cannot get the results with date formatting to match what you are posting.

Post back if you want to understand the problem asn we can continue.

Regards,

Wayne

Okay, Wayne, let's try this:

I have an email attachment that contains my name. If I open it with Numbers, it is corrupted. If I try to remove my name and save it, it is still corrupted. The only way that I can send you the XLS file is to attach the original attachment. If this is acceptable to you, let me know. I don't mind having you and others know my name or measurements. I can even send you the email from my iPhone if you so want
