Email. Why do I have to hit refresh to receive emails?

I used to own a blackberry, whereby new email messages would be delivered automatically. With the iPhone, unless I leave the phone over ought, or hit update/refresh, I don't get new emails.

It's not a huge issue, but it would be nice to receive emails as they come in, rather than"look" for them.

Any suggestions?
